Surf and Turf

About Surf and Turf

Local perception of the changing landscape and traditions, folk stories, local tales and distinctive landmarks are the inspiration for this creative project over two summers in Suffolk.

The London Sinfonietta and Orchestras Live initiated this project with four local areas of Suffolk: Babergh; Suffolk Coastal; Forest Heath and Mid Suffolk.

In summer 2009, music workshop leader Fraser Trainer and poet leader Dean Parkin worked with London Sinfonietta musicians, along with community and school groups in Babergh District and Suffolk Coastal. The groups created brand new work which was showcased in the concerts at the Shipwreck Pub (Shotley, Babergh District) and Landguard Fort (Felixstowe, Suffolk Coastal). London Sinfonietta musicians and a group of young people drawn from a cluster of local Stowmarket Primary Schools will showcase brand new music. The groups will work together in a 4-day project to create the new work which will be performed as part of the Stowmarket Festival. Alongside the new music, will be performances of existing repertoire by the London Sinfonietta.

August 2010, Newmarket

Later on in the summer term, the ensemble will be working in Newmarket in a unique cross-arts project with ‘lads’ and ‘lasses’ from the horse-racing centre Newmarket. Thousands of young men and women come to Newmarket from all over the British Isles for the racing season to be part of the buzz that takes over this town, and get involved in the vibrant racing scene. This project will give this community a chance to share a glimpse of their unique lifestyles, by creating new music and artwork that reflects the world they live and work in.
